Scoliosis of the spine affects 2-4 % of the population and is more common in women. Depending on the age of person with scoliosis the method of management will vary, but exercise will always be an integral part of caring for this condition. In this course we will review the etiology of scoliosis and recent research and treatment options in the management of scoliosis. The Pilates apparatus and method will be presented as tools for building the spine stability and muscle balance needed to reduce pain and prevent progression of the curve.

Course Objectives:

  1. Participants will differentiate between the needs of the adolescent with scoliosis and the adult with scoliosis.
  2. Participants will evaluate the stability of the spine in relation to the mobility of the limbs.
  3. Participants will incorporate functional exercises using the Pilates apparatus to balance mobility and stability.
  4. Participants will demonstrate mat based exercises to use as home programs for creating balanced movement.
  5. Participants will incorporate aspects of Pilates breathing in the management of Scoliosis.
